POSITION TITLE: Educational Sign Language Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

DESCRIPTION: OAISD currently has a temporary educational interpreter position available. This temporary part-time position will serve adult special needs students on Tuesdays (all day) and Thursday mornings. The educational interpreter will facilitate communication between the student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and non-signing members of the classroom/school community.
QUALIFICATIONS: An interpreter for the deaf or hard of hearing shall meet the qualifications as set forth in Mich. Admin. Code R. 393.5026.
Fully qualified educational interpreter with an EIPA Performance Score of 4.0 or above (someone with less than a 4.0 will be considered as a substitute while working toward a 4.0). The interpreter must also hold a Michigan Educational Endorsement (elementary preferred).
Must be fluent in various forms of communication including ASL or the form of sign language determined by the educational team.
Demonstrates a command of both written and oral English including correct syntax, semantics and spelling.
Completes continuing education units required by the state of Michigan in order to maintain licensure.
Maintains cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public while maintaining student confidentiality.
Works effectively as part of a team of professionals.
Exemplifies appropriate professional behavior which includes demonstrating a high moral character, a warm and receptive attitude toward students and the school community, and a willingness to work with all students who are deaf/hard of hearing in need of interpreting services, regardless of language or cognitive abilities.
Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.T
The person selected for this position will be the one who offers the best combination of training, experience, and attributes in accordance with the following:
EIPA certified, elementary or secondary endorsed, performance score of 4.0 and passing score of the EIPA written test, PREFERRED.
Experience working with special needs adults preferred.
Ability to demonstrate mature judgment and moral and ethical behavior.
Ability to carry out instructions and responsibilities.
Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.
Must meet the requirements of School Safety Legislation - Complete Fingerprint records required.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Educational Sign Language Interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communications among deaf or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. Furthermore, the interpreter may be asked to provide additional services for the student as needed. Responsibilities include:
Interpreting the total class environment or activity to maximize the student's opportunities to obtain all information and communication. Besides voicing, transliteration and voice interpreting, the interpreter will paraphrase, redefine and summarize when necessary-both verbal and written communications.
Duties include interpreting a variety of materials in American Sign Language and may include providing some tutoring, supportive duties and related work as required.
Providing language instruction (preview or review of language concepts) during classroom time.
Providing interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, during regularly scheduled school hours.
Participating as a DHH/Educational team member to serve the needs of ALL students (including but not limited to making copies, filing, cutting, preparing materials, supervising, toileting, etc.)
Serving as a liaison to promote good public relations between the deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing peers, staff, faculty members and parents.
Participating as a part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students as identified in their Individual Education Plan or as assigned by the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
Acting as a member of the educational team by providing the teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing with input relative to the student's use of the interpreter.
Monitoring student comprehension of communication.
Maintaining regular and reliable attendance, performance, and physical ability to do the job.
Compensation: Gr. 14 ($26.15 - $31+) per hour.
